Year of New Beer (Rnd 1): Hunahpu's Imperial Stout, Cigar City Brewing (FL)

Sometimes when I drink a beer, it turns out to be nothing like I was expecting. That's not always good. In this case, however, it's fantastic. The nose is loaded with chocolate, almost fudge-like, with hints of wood and the cinnamon used in the brewing. On the tongue is where things go next level. Yes, the chocolate coats the tongue, but the sharp sting of cinnamon and charred chiles provide a unique and unexpected twist. As the beer warms, dark fruits linger on the tongue, along with the faintest hints of vanilla. Big on flavor without being heavy in body. Outstanding. This is one I've wanted to try for a long time, and I appreciate Greg Leimer sharing his bottle with Chris Vandergrift and myself. The beer was almost as good as the company.
