Year of New Beer: Genesis Blond Sour, Wicked Weed Brewing (NC)

Written By: Dion on 04/10/2015

As the sour style of beer digs its claws deeper and deeper into my flesh, I'm thankful to have this one from perhaps the hottest brewery in the country to enjoy this evening. The nose is tart with a leading edge of lemon zest that only slightly masks the tropical fruits that went into the brewing. Lesser elements of dry white wine and oak push ahead of a slight hint of acetone. On the tongue is a puckering bite that reeks of Sweet Tarts and lemon drops. The pineapple, mango, and guava are sharp and unripened, with only the faintest hint of candied sugar for contrast. Light woody notes and traces of crabapple round out the tart, dry finish. Add to all of this flavor some of the absolute best label art in the country, and it's easy to see why Wicked Weed is quickly becoming THE brewery to watch. Cannot wait til these beers begin to see distribution to KY.
