Year of New Beer: Slam Dunkel, Blue Stallion Brewing (Lexington)

To celebrate the NCAA tournament, Blue Stallion ramped up their traditional Dunkel by doing what any self- respecting Kentuckian would do...they shoved it in a bourbon barrel. The nose is sweet, as baked dessert breads coexist peacefully with a trace of roasted nuts and a hint of bourbon. On the tongue, bread crust and caramel malt lead the way, with a touch of earthy hops underneath. The bourbon presence is subtle, sweeter than it is hot, with no oak or barrel character of which to speak. A little thin on mouthfeel, but an enjoyable complement to a steak on the grill nonetheless. Can't wait to try the beers these guys have planned for Lexington Craft Beer Week.
