Year of New Beer: Chocolate Covered Black Angel, Wicked Weed Brewing (Asheville)

Outstanding nose on this beer as the tart cherries assert themselves quickly, with a sharp red wine/grape element as well. Rich chocolate is content to seemingly hide in the background, revealing itself against a slightly musty oak. On the tongue, this beer really delivers as advertised. Sour and acidic to start, a definitive chocolate covered cherry arrives mid-palate, along with notes of oak and red wine. Other than the wood characteristics, I would not have guessed this was bourbon barrel aged, as that element does not come forward. Nor does it need to. Sharp and dry on the finish, with continuing whispers of chocolate. This is really nice.
