Year of New Beer: Old Rasputin XVIII (Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged), North Coast Brewing (CA)

Bitter cocoa powder, charred oak, mild espresso, brownie batter, spicy whiskey...this beer has a lot going on when it comes to the aroma. The elements that are present on the nose rollover to the tongue in a similar fashion as an intensely roasted malt sets the tone early. The chocolate seems to present a little sweeter approaching mid-palate with traces of caramel and vanilla softening the spicy, woody tones that persist throughout. The alcohol is very well integrated, however, and the flavors seem to blend and mellow with warmth. Excellent beer.
