Year of New Beer: Pump[KY]n, Avery Brewing Company (CO)

Written By: Dion on 10/31/2017

This bottle has been tucked away quietly in my beer cellar for three years, with the thought being the flavors would mellow and intertwine. Since I never tasted one fresh, I'm not sure if my experiment has been successful or not. The nose features a plethora of fall scents...cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and clove are all prominent. Brown sugar, chocolate, and a tidal wave of bourbon join in as the glass warms. On the tongue, sweet molasses and raisins lead the way, with a charred malt bitterness arriving mid-palate. Caramel, vanilla, and cinnamon combine with freshly baked pumpkin bread to add layers of flavor to the intense bourbon base. Sweet, sticky, and alcoholic through the finish. I'm not sure if more time mellows this out or not. Nice in a small amount, but just too sweet and too hot to put down solo.
