Year of New Beer: Father Figure, Monday Night Brewing (Atlanta)

Initially, this beer really doesn't have much going on in the aroma department. A little earthy, slightly spicy, and only traces of bourbon. With warmth, however, dark fruits, brown sugar, and a yeast note begin to take hold. On the tongue, things are more interesting from the jump. Roasted malts, sweet caramel and vanilla are all present against dusty oak and slightly funky yeast note. Bourbon becomes more pronounced on a finish that eventually becomes a bit thin, even though it seems to drink bigger than its 7% tag. This isn't bad, but ultimately the nuances of the saison are muted and overpowered by 20 months in a bourbon barrel.
