Year of New Beer: Freigeist Abraxxxas Pear Lichtenhainer, Braustelle (Germany)

With my sense of smell slowly returning, I popped the top on this Berliner Weissbier expecting tart fruits. Instead, I got mostly just an essence of smoked malts. Very similar on the tongue, as the initial characteristic is definitely an overriding smoke that is joined by some unripened pear mid-palate. The tartness gives way to the slightest fruit skin and sweetness at the finish. Very unusual for the style, in my opinion, but a nice pairing to some grilled chicken and pasta.
