Year of New Beer: Bourbon Barrel Aged Flying Mouflan, Tröegs Independent Brewing (PA)

Caramel, butterscotch, raisins and light cocoa powder on the nose. Warmth allows bourbon, oak, and an earthy hop note to develop. On the tongue, the hop bitterness and bourbon kick threaten to overpower things initially. With a little aeration and warmth, however, sweet brown sugar, figs, and bready malt begin to add to the layers of flavor. Oak, vanilla, and slightly bitter citrus peel round out a sticky, resinous finish. The original Flying Mouflan was an early craft beer favorite of mine, and the barrel aged version is no less enjoyable.
