Year of New Beer: Living Proof: Tart Saison, Country Boy Brewing (Lexington)

The second of Country Boy's Friday bottle releases dials the sour back a couple notches, but the result is no less enjoyable. Tart grapes, green apple, and a touch of red wine vinegar hit the nose first, with leather and oak tones stepping up with warmth. Traces of bretty funk as well, but the sour seems to overcome the more traditional saison aromas. The nose transitions well to the tongue, with the red wine acidity tickling the taste buds before allowing fleeting suggestions of grape and apple sweetness along the mid-palate. Here is where a touch of peppery spice and yeast begin to show, blending nicely with dusty oak notes and hints of vanilla. Remains sharp through a fairly dry finish. Really nice beer. Love how the Living Proof Series has established itself as a worthy vehicle for so many variations. Like the Peach Golden Wild, this one will be available in both taprooms starting on Friday.
