Year of New Beer: Bourbon Barrel Aged Aunt Hohmima, Ethereal Brewing (Lexington)

You'll never hear me complain about a brewery taking an already delicious stout and letting it age in some barrels for a while. This is certainly no exception. Whereas the original had an aroma of almost straight pancakes and syrup, this iteration allows a much stronger coffee presence, along with a charred oak and light bourbon. On the tongue, roasted malts and dark chocolate team up with oak, vanilla, and caramel to tantalize the taste buds. Not a ton of bourbon comes through, but it's enough to knock a bit of the sweetness off the original version. This is outstanding. If you are a fan of big stouts, you don't want to miss it.
