Year of New Beer: German Chocolate Snake Cake, West 6th Brewing (Lexington)

Given that this is a variant of such an excellent beer to begin with, it's probably not really a stretch to expect it to be very good as well. But sometimes, the aroma alone tells you that you're in for a real treat. This is legitimately straight-up German Chocolate cake on the nose. Coconut abounds, resting on a sweet chocolate cake and nut base. Very subtle notes of bourbon and vanilla that increase just a bit with warmth. Equally impressive on the tongue as the namesake dessert is presented flawlessly. Impossibly rich chocolate cake batter still allows the coconut to maintain a firm footing, while aeration brings the pecan into the spotlight. The barrel influence is masterful, providing just enough bourbon heat and oak to balance the overall sweetness of the beer. Stunningly delicious. This is easily one of the top 4 or 5 beers I've had this year.
