Year of New Beer (rnd 1): Rum Barrel Porchata, Mirror Twin Brewing (Lexington)

Refusing to rest on their haze-driven laurels, Mirror Twin throws a curveball with Saturday's release of this delicious treat. The big draw here is the rum barrel, and it comes through in blazing fashion, full of oak, spice, and caramel. Playing heavily to its Horchata inspiration, the nose features subtle cinnamon and nutty malts alongside a ribbon of vanilla that deepens with warmth. Not being a huge fan of cinnamon in beer, I find this to be very well balanced. Coupled with the rum influence, the spices blend nicely atop a base of chocolate and light coffee bean. Undercurrents of oak and campfire char marry well to dark fruits that develop through the glass. The entire production comes off sweet and silky smooth thanks to the vanilla. Drinks a little bigger than the advertised 10.5%, but has anyone ever complained about that? This is very nicely done.
