Year of New Beer: Girl on Fire, Rock House Brewing (Lexington)

Created by the ladies at Rock House to commemorate International Women's Day, this imperial stout opens with a nose of charred malts, chocolate, and a solid cinnamon kick. Really nice transition to the tongue as rich, roasty malts and earthy hops are augmented by a subtle jalapeño spice. I was afraid that the peppers combined with the cassia bark (Chinese cinnamon) might make this too spicy for my liking, but they've been administered judiciously, allowing the sweetness of the chocolate to keep things in check. A lot of flavor packed into a relatively light body, with very little alcohol burn. Excellent work.
