Year of New Beer: Bourbon Barreled El Chaco, Maiden City Brewing Co (Cynthiana, KY)

The nose is greeted right away by a burst of coffee, rich and robust in its presentation. Bourbon is subtle, building slightly with warmth. Hazelnut is very light and remains so throughout. On the tongue, coffee again takes the early lead, but the bourbon heat builds a bit more quickly than it does in the aroma. Nice earthy, roasty base with just a touch of bitterness. Dark fruits with a touch of cola and oak on a warming, dry finish. Much like their Vladibeer Brewtin, this is a lighter bodied stout, which maybe sacrifices a bit of sweetness in favor of increased drinkability. And there's certainly nothing wrong with that.
