Year of New Beer: Matt's Burning Rosids, Stone Brewing (CA)

Initial aromas of Belgian yeast, pepper, and apple skins are overwhelmed by the cherrywood smoke, leaving me wondering if this beer is headed in the right direction. With warmth, however, the smoke tones down quite a bit, and a really nice fruit component comes forward. Some tropical notes as well as a tart, white grape element and a sharper grassy tone keep the tongue guessing. An unusual take on the saison style, but a beer that I seemed to enjoy more and more with each sip.
