Year of New Beer: Barrel Aged Lucius Clay, Country Boy Brewing (Lexington)

Take the already dangerously drinkable golden stout and put it in a bourbon barrel? Take my money. Surprisingly, coffee still holds the upper hand in the aroma department, offering up waves of roasted bean and chocolate against a backdrop of vanilla and a subtle bourbon note. Everything I loved about the base beer remains...coffee with cream that defies the appearance, resting atop lightly toasted grains that provide a balancing sweetness. With warmth, the bourbon barrel influence becomes evident, allowing layers of vanilla and caramel to deepen against hints of oak char. Slightly sweet with only a suggestion of warming alcohol. Ridiculously smooth for its ABV. Definitely worth stopping by the taproom, or you can hit up Bluegrass Liquor Box Canewood in Georgetown tomorrow as they preview three special barreled CBB beers.
