Year of New Beer: Hoppopotamus, Metazoa Brewing Co (Indianapolis)

What's this? An IPA free of lactose, vanilla, and fruit puree? Do breweries still make those? Turns out they do, and, in this case, they do it quite well. Grapefruit and orange strike the nose first, offering up equal parts juice and peel. Hints of pineapple and caramel arrive with warmth. Seamless transition to the tongue, where the hops come in nicely balanced between sweet fruit juice and pithy bitterness. Lightly floral, almost honeysuckle across the middle, deepening to sweeter caramel malts as the temperature elevates. Just a suggestion of pine before returning to citrus on a slightly sticky finish. Really nice, classic IPA.
