Year of New Beer: St. Lenny's, Shmaltz Brewing (NY)

Caramel malt dominates the nose with lesser notes of candied apricot, toasted rye bread, molasses, and hints of Belgian yeast. On the tongue, a brief sweetness is quickly overtaken by a spicy, leafy hop bitterness that digs in firmly through the finish. There it is joined by a faint black licorice/medicinal tone and warming alcohol. This is an interesting take on the style, and I recommend it if you like rye beers. Purchased at The Beer Trappe.
