Year of New Beer: Bourbon Barrel Belgian-Style Dark Ale, Boulevard Brewing (Kansas City, MO)

The second of the three beer mixed six is no less delicious than the first. Wonderful nose of plums, raisins, apricots, and toffee. Bourbon is there, but surprisingly subtle. On the tongue, the bourbon steps up a bit, bringing caramel, vanilla, and a little oak. The dark fruits are still very present, taking on a sweeter, candied tone, backed by just a touch of spice on the finish. Even though the bourbon isn't harsh at all, I think it does diminish some of the more traditional Belgian qualities. Still a very nice beer.
