Year of New Beer: County Series: Montgomery, West 6th Brewing Co (Lexington)

For the latest installment in the series, West 6th takes their already delicious Christmas ale and knocks it out of the park by aging it in vanilla extract bourbon barrels. The nose is decadent, featuring raisins, figs, and caramel draped in vanilla and a bourbon soaked oak char. Warmth really allows the development of a spice cake note. On the tongue, the perfect seasonal flavors come through. This is like a vanilla frosted gingerbread cake that has been wrapped in bourbon-infused cheesecloth, a la your grandma's rummy fruitcake. Subtle chocolate, cinnamon, and cola tones join the dark fruits, and the bourbon continues to flex throughout. If you tackle this yourself, it's easily a few hour sipper. Glad I was able to get over and buy a bottle of this before it was gone. Well done.
