Year of New Beer: Nuttiest Professor, Avery Brewing Company (CO)

I never had this beer fresh, so I'm pretty sure I'm not getting the same experience that most folks did two and a half years ago when it was released. That said, I'm not complaining. The nose is loaded with bourbon, backed by a layer of bourbon that seems content to rest upon an undercurrent of bourbon. With traces of molasses, charred malts, and bourbon. Surprisingly, on the tongue, there's bourbon. All kidding aside, burnt sugars and a heavy dose of chocolate join the fray, along with some much anticipated peanut shell. Certainly this most important aspect of the beer has eroded with time, but it's still there in a pleasantly subtle form. Gets pretty sweet with caramel on the finish, but has a decent roast to balance things out. Amazingly drinkable given the ridiculous ABV.
