Year of New Beer: Double Mele Kalikirocka, Rock House Brewing (Lexington)

Is it possible to stuff a tropical island into a can? A luau maybe? Because I think this is what they did here. Juicy pineapple hits the nose first, augmented in its sweetness by a rich coconut that further hammers home the cocktail feel of this beer. Old school, double IPAs by nature are often malty and sweet, so it's a little difficult to tell where the honey backbone ends and the pineapple juice begins, but that doesn't really bother me. Whereas the Double Kick Drum base beer is a little dank, this one goes in a completely different direction. The tropical fruit tames the herbal aspects of the hops, and then the coconut rolls in full force, providing a smooth, creamy texture. This is just full on beachy goodness, with not a hint of the alcohol hidden within. Nicely done.
