Year of New Beer: Rye Barleywine (for J.D. Salinger), Zebulon Artisan Ales (NC)

Told myself I was going to age this one for a bit before opening. That idea lasted a month. Nose opens with oak, leather, and dark fruits. Earthy hops and alcohol hit with some warmth. Deep into the glass I get an interesting berry note, along with hints of caramel. On the tongue, this is initially just a blast of alcohol. But it doesn't take long for some aeration to open up some really nice layers. Earthy bitterness still at the forefront, but traces of brown sugar, charred oak, and creamy vanilla take turns in the spotlight. Rye spice lends heat throughout against some awesome woody tones. Wish I had bought a second one, surely it would've lasted a while. If you find yourself in Asheville, do yourself a favor and make the short drive north to visit this brewery, you won't be disappointed.
