Year of New Beer: Manhattan Social Club, Boulevard Brewing Co (Kansas City, MO)

Full disclosure...since I'm not a cocktail drinker, I've never had a Manhattan. If this is even remotely similar, I just might have to try one. Big rye whiskey note on the nose, with undercurrents of dark fruits, caramel, and orange peel. On the tongue, this is rich and sweet. The whiskey influence is still dominant, but rather than just bringing straight heat, it offers more nuanced aspects of berries, oak, and vanilla. Nice herbal tones across the middle, with hints of the orange peel and cinnamon coming on a finish that trends toward brown sugar. This is a big, boozy beer at 12.5%, and will likely be too sweet for some, but I enjoyed it.
