Year of New Beer: - Russian Imperial Stout (for John Bonham), Zebulon Artisan Ales (NC)

Roasty nose of charred malts and baker's chocolate to kick things off. Opens up to allow some dark fruits and hints of bourbon-soaked oak. Really smooth on the tongue, starting off with a light espresso that is softened by what presents as a creamy vanilla. There's a certain element of campfire char through the middle, adding a grilled plum/fig note. Earthy hops provide a moderate bitterness. Only late does the whiskey barrel influence begin to flex, and even then, it's restrained. This beer is exceptional in its subtlety, as a variety of aspects take a turn in the spotlight. In short, a work of art. If you find yourself in Asheville, I implore you to make the short drive to Zebulon and enjoy some of the best beers in the country.
