Year of New Beer: Shaky Staves, West 6th Brewing Co (Lexington)

Started this one off a bit cold, which muted the aroma for sure. A little aeration and warmth brings on a nice, nutty coffee and baker's chocolate. Hints of bourbon linger in the background, replete with caramel and lightly charred oak. Starts understated on the tongue as well. This is lighter-bodied than most beers that find their way into barrels at West 6th. As such, it benefits from being served at warmer temperatures. Cold brewed coffee with a touch of cocoa powder. Nutty, with traces of bread crust and mild tobacco leaf. Bourbon steps up mid-palate, offering some caramel sweetness and a faint alcohol warmth. Coffee maintains the upper hand through the finish, seemingly gaining more chocolate as the glass empties. Very nicely balanced and easy drinking.
