
Year of New Beer (Round 1): Southern Charred, Stone Brewing (CA)

I had been looking for the right occasion to open this, and I'm glad I picked today. Taking their 2012 Double Bastard Ale and giving it a series of barrel agings, Stone has brewed up a treat. The nose is striking in its sweetness, with caramel and vanilla leading the way, while dark fruits, charred oak, and bourbon come in waves. Much the same on the tongue as the flavors layer on with a smooth, buttery richness. Burnt sugar and a stronger bourbon warmth are here, along with a surprising amount of bitterness still remaining. Great beer, and certainly one I'm glad I didn't tackle on my own.
