Year of New Beer (Round 3): Samuel Adams Utopias, Boston Beer Co. (MA)

The main event of our tasting today was this beast, a "beer" in the loosest of terms. Pushing 30% alcohol, an ounce or so in a snifter is about all you need. The nose comes at you like an exquisite port or cognac, laden with rich, dark fruits, syrupy sweetness, and hints of woodiness. The first sip is hot, as the alcohol literally hits the soft palate with a wasabi-like aggression! Beyond that, however, is a really nice array of flavors that mimic the aroma beautifully. Plums, dates, maple syrup and traces of woody spice. Amazingly drinkable considering its weight.
