Year of New Beer: Terra Incognita, Sierra Nevada/Boulevard Brewing (CA/MO)

An imperial brown ale is aged partially in red wine barrels, partially in bourbon barrels, then blended to form this outstanding brew. The nose reveals layers of tart grapes, oak, vanilla, and bourbon. On the tongue, these layers develop more thoroughly as the red wine notes provide a slight, dry crispness, but are balanced nicely by traces of sweet vanilla. The oak aging adds a slightly smoky depth, while the bourbon provides a touch of heat. All the while, nothing dominates, instead everything blends masterfully. Whereas many of the barrel aged stouts are thick and rich, sometimes difficult to enjoy by without sharing, this brown ale base provides a great platform for a complex finished product that is a delight to drink.
