Year of New Beer: Kölsch, Atrium Brewing (Louisville)

So much fun getting to be a part of the "Friends and Family" sneak preview for Atrium in Louisville today. Beautifully renovated space, and some fantastic beers right out of the gate. But with Mark and Spencer handling the beverage side of things, fantastic beers were pretty much a given. This Kölsch is clean, crisp, and delicious. In a lighter beer like this, there's really no place to hide any flaws, which makes really good ones hard to do. This is a really good one. The nose is filled with lightly toasted grains, a hint of lemon, and a very subtle herbal hop quality. On the tongue, things start with a slightly spicy grain husk that marries well with the hop character, providing just the right amount of bite. Super smooth across the middle with the lemon giving way to a faint, but sweeter white grape note. Stays lightly fruity and a bit dry on the finish. Excellent warm weather crusher. Sampled 6 beers in all, with each being excellent. These guys are going to be a huge addition to the Louisville beer scene. Huge thanks to the ownership at Atrium for putting on an awesome event and for giving me the opportunity to get in on the fun.
